Depending on where you are in the world, a different institution will be responsible for the granting or registration of coats of arms. Please note that worldwide there is practically only the authority in Scotland which has absolute legal power over heraldry. In most other countries the 'authority' is only a relative one.

For those living in countries which used to be European colonies, often the heraldic authority of the former colonial power offers official registrations to those with hereditary links.

In some cases continued usage or adoption may be sufficient. Please contact us for further advice and clarification.
