Director of Institute honoured.
Dr John F. Müller FRHistS has been appointed Knight Commanders of the Order of Merit of the Royal House of Portugal and of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing.

Dr Müller, Director and co-founder of the Heraldic Institute, has previously been a Knight of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing and has now been promoted to the rank of Knight Commander within the Royal Brotherhood of the Order of Archangel S. Michael (Rcmilord Canada) while also being appointed a Knight Commander in the Order of Merit of the Royal House of Portugal (Braganza), in recognition of his service to the Order and to the study and practice of heraldry.
A historian and heraldic specialist, Dr Müller has a PhD from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His work encompasses the design and study of coats of arms, the identification of historic heraldry, and the creation of heraldic objects and ceremonial material. He is also a regular contributor to Country Life.
The appointment comes during a period of significant reform and renewal within the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing. The Canadian Brotherhood was established in May 2026 as part of these reforms and is part of the Portuguese Federation of Royal Brotherhoods of the Order of Archangel Saint Michael.
Since its establishment, Dr Müller has assisted the Canadian Brotherhood in developing its heraldic and ceremonial identity, advising on heraldic matters and contributing to the creation of appropriate coats of arms, banners and other designs necessary for ceremonial. His involvement has helped the new Brotherhood establish a visual language (to be launched soon) appropriate to its history, traditions and place within the wider Federation.
The Canadian Brotherhood is headed by His Royal Highness Dom Duarte, Duke of Bragança, Head of the Portuguese Royal House, together with His Excellency Bishop Scott McCaig, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Military Ordinariate of Canada.
